What's in this site?

Concern for Jerusalem's image and character is shared by wide circles in Israel and throughout the world. For many years, various organizations and groups in Jerusalem have battled against processes and trends which threaten the city's image, including uncontrolled building in open spaces, high-rises, destruction of historic neighborhoods, etc. These environmental struggles continue today.

Alongside protest activity, there has been a growing need in recent years to identify a vision for the future that will guide the planning and growth of Jerusalem in accordance with the principles of sustainable development. In order to articulate this vision, a coalition of local and national member organizations was formed. Within the framework of this coalition, a vision for the city's future was formulated and the preparation of a plan for a Sustainable Jerusalem was begun. The plan proposes a long-term policy for the development of metropolitan Jerusalem. The first stage of this program offers planning guidelines in defined sectors such as demography, conservation, open spaces and the natural environment. The second stage, in preparation, presents planning alternatives for the future which integrate the various sectors. Ultimately, an integrated sustainable plan for Jerusalem will be presented to the public.

Parallel to the preparation of a comprehensive plan for the city, groups of lay residents joined professionals in advocating specific plans leading to to a new urban environment. These plans seek to offer innovative initiatives in the areas of neighborhood planning, conservation of green areas, environmental policy, education and culture, citizen involvement and communications.
